Barmitzvah

Barmitzvah comes from the Jewish term "Son of the Commandments", referring to young men in their 13th year, or young women in their 12th year (Batmutzvah). It is an initiation into the adult religious community, lasting for a year and climaxing in a ceremony where the young person was welcomed into the community, and considered responsible for their actions and keeping the commandments.

Puberty is a process of massive change and adjustment - just as children begin to naturally pull away from parents, they need them most, but in a new and different way.

This part of the curriculum gives us the opportunity to look at the changes that will happen in our young people's lives as they approach adulthood. We also explore issues with parents who come in to school once a month to look at these issues from a parent's perspective. Topics and themes include -

*Changing Me

Creating an autobiographical album that chronicles the pupil's life so far including Timelines, Sad Times, Happy Times, Where I am with God, Hopes and aspirations and includes photos and personal artefacts.

Exploring the physical, emotional changes during puberty.

"Naar" - the Jewish term "youth breaking free", we explore areas in which young people begine to seek independence and negotiate freedoms.

Body Image & Eating Disorders

Substance Abuse

* Conflict Resolution and Negotiating

*Bible studies on key young bible figures

*The Media - discerning it's power, influence and message

*My place in the ...World/Church/Family

The course culminates in a meal together, parents, teachers, pupils when the pupils will give a presentation on the course, hand over the autobiographical album and receive a certificate.

We begin the year by looking at "Naar" - youth breaking free. Little Eric may have loved his Toy Story wallpaper when he was 7 but it is beginning to look less appealing at 13! How are your child's interests changing - what pet names are starting to annoy - what ways are you beginning to rub them up the wrong way? As Little Eric seeks more independence from his parents, does he realise that this is the time he needs them most, and their relationship will change?

We will then begin our autobiographical project.

Work from the unit will periodically be posted on this page.
