SURVIVAL
The six strangers boarded the light aircraft for the short flight to Barbados. There was Jim a builder going to get a job in Barbados, his wife Mary she was nervous about flying. The next passenger was Paul, an ex soldier who was visiting an old army friend in Barbados. Phil Jones a nervous bank clerk looking forward to joining the international bank on the island, the final passengers were twins Ken and Joe, who drove holiday maker on tours around the island in their boat.
About thirty minutes into the journey they heard the muffled voice of the pilot over the intercom, it sounded like there was some kind of problem. The explosion was massive, no-one really knew what had happened, some said it was a bird that flew into the propeller and it set the engine on fire. All they knew was that one minute they were in the air and the next they were in the Atlantic Ocean, swimming for their lives. What remained of the light aircraft was now floating all around them. They grabbed what they could and floated to a nearby Island.
As the survivors gathered on the island not a word was spoken. They were all speechless. They looked around them and saw that they were surrounded by beautiful golden sand and trees filled with tropical fruits. After a while they decided that they needed a team leader if they were going to survive. They needed someone to take charge of the situation and tell them what to do. Paul the ex solider was the perfect person for the job. Paul gave orders for the team to build a shelter for sleeping in and to collect food for eating. Phil sat quietly shaking nervously, the others tried to calm him down, but he wouldn't listen he just kept repeating
'We're all going to die'.
Jim started looking for something to build a shelter with, his wife helped him, they found sticks and enormous leaves that had fallen to the ground from the many trees on the island. In no time Jim had built a shelter big enough for them all to fit in. Ken and Joe arrived back with loads of tropical fruits, it was then that they noticed that Phil was missing. They split up into pairs and started to look for him. Just as it was starting to get dark, Jim, started to call out to the others he had found him. Everyone ran to where the voice was coming from, only to9 find Phil was laid on a rock dead. He had committed suicide by jumping off a cliff at the water's edge.
The atmosphere changed after Phil's death, the gang were arguing and blaming each other for what had happened. The sun was becoming too hot, they were all felling thirsty and bad tempered, they knew that they had to get off this island if they were to survive. By dark fall and they knew nothing could be done until morning. They rubbed sticks together to make a fire and cooked some fish that Ken had caught earlier. They made a delicious meal out of the fish with a delicious pudding to finish out of the tropical fruits.
The next morning they felt a bit more positive and decided on a plan of action. Ken and Joe knew small aeroplanes flew to Barbados during the day, and hopefully they would fly near to where they were at some time during the day, they would have to try and attract the plane's attention. They scraped the word 'help' into the sand with their feet and lit a fire in each letter of the word. They would now have to wait and hope and pray that they would be seen.
After what seemed like hours they heard a noise in the distance, it seemed to be getting closer, a small light aircraft appeared from behind the clouds and was heading towards them. They all jumped to their feet and started shouting and waving the giant leaves from the trees. The aeroplane flew over the top of the island and it looked like it was flying away from them.
The plane disappeared into the clouds once more, the gang looked shocked and there was silence between them all as the disappointment filled them. Suddenly they saw the top of the plane heading back towards them. It swooped down gracefully and landed on the sand. The survivors all climbed aboard and were taken home to the safety of their families. They had the unfortunate task of telling Phil's family that he had not survived.
