Treaty Of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was agreed in June 1920, as the result of the Paris Peace Conference.

Negotiations were dominated by the ‘Big Three’:

  • the USA represented by Woodrow Wilson
  • Britain represented by Lloyd George
  • France whose President was Clemenceau.

Main terms of the Treaty

  • Germany were guilty of causing the First World War
  • Germany must pay reparations of £6,600 million
  • Germany was not allowed to unite with Austria
  • Germany’s army was to be limited to 100,000 men
  • Germany’s navy was severly limited and allowed no submarines
  • The Rhineland was to be demilitarized
  • The Saar was to be under French control
  • Danzig was to be a free city
  • Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France
  • All German colonies were surrendered to the League of Nations

Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles under protest.
