SURVIVAL

The Island

He'd been on the island for two days with only his friends and some things that he needed that he managed to get. How did he manage to get there in the first place?

'Get out!' shouted Sam, 'The Ship's gonna crash!' Suddenly the ship was in disorder. Everyone was panicking and rushing to get to a life boat. Then, impact. The boat split into two. Countless people dived into the water and many into the life boats 'come on' shouted Sam to his friends, 'I've got the bag!' The four of them jumped into the boat just in time. The ship began to sink as the survivors watched in horror. Then a huge gust of wind sent them on their way.

So that's how he got there but what had they been doing since? Sam and his friends Tom, Jack and Will were strong young men in their holidays. Sam was a mechanic and could fix almost anything. He was 21 and had an average live of work. Tom was an electrician. At 20 years old he was a successful man. Jack and Will were brothers. They had their own company in security and were good friends of Tom and Sam.

They got to the island after one nights rowing. Exhausted they looked at the island in amazement. It was a island full of trees and had a mountain on the left. It had long stretches of beach and had an abundance of fish. They looked at each other and smiled. As soon as they landed they pulled the boat in and sat down for a rest.

'This isn't going to be as bad as I thought!' exclaimed Tom.

'True' said Sam ' but don't judge a book by it's cover.'

He stood up and stretched 'Who's in for a bit of exploring?' Immediately Tom stood up 'Me!' he said and picked up a branch as a walking stick. The brothers looked at each other and nodded. They stood up and followed the other two.

'Wow! there's plenty of fruits and plants here.' Exclaimed Tom 'Where's the stream though?' The four went around looking for it. 'Here it is!' announced Will ' Its quite big! Hidden by the bushes.' He pulled the bushes out of the way for the others to see.

'There is as well!' exclaimed Sam 'There's a reliable water source. Let's just hope it lasts. Let's carry on.' They carried on walking and found many other things, which would be useful to them.

When they got back to the landing site they moved a bit inland and set up camp.

'We'd better make one that lasts' said Tom 'We never know how long we'll be here.' They took some wood from the trees and made a wall around the camp for security against predators, which they had heard earlier. Then they made a roof out of leafs and a sheet of waterproof lining which Jack took from the boat. Suddenly they had a visitor, 'Snake!' shouted Will, the four of them rushed to see it ' Now we're going to have to build the beds above the ground.

After a days hard work the camp was finished and a small fire was lit to warm them up. Then something washed up on the beach. They all ran to see what it was. Tom picked it up and looked at it. Sam snatched it off him

'Hey' said Tom 'Who gave you the right to do that?'

'Me' said Sam 'I'm the oldest so I make the decisions.' They quarrelled until Will had the sense to shut them up.

'Where not getting anywhere here!' he shouted. The two stopped.

'We need to elect a leader in the group.' Said Jack 'Let's put everyone's name on a piece of paper and draw out a name from a hat.' They all thought this was a great idea but there was a problem

'Where do we get the paper and the hat from?' asked Tom

'We'll have to all pick a stone and put a mark on them with a knife. Each has a different mark belonging to a person. We put them in a bag and Sam will pull one out.' So that was what they did and Sam was found leader of the group. He was amazed but took his job seriously. He treated every person fairly and everyone had his own job and responsibility. One day the food ran out.

'Time to go fishing!' Sam announced. They all picked up their ready made spears and jumped into their boat.

'Lets fish!' shouted Tom and they paddled away from the shore until they met the fish. Sam made the first move and speared a fish. Tom followed. Soon the boat was full of fish. They rowed ashore and put the fish in the 'fridge' they made out of stone. Jack took two out and cooked it for everyone.

'Delicious!' exclaimed Will ' I could eat this everyday!' They all ate their fill and the left overs were left for supper.

'I was thinking' said Jack 'How will we get off this island?'

'Hmmmm' said Sam 'Good question, never thought of that.' They all sat in deep thought. 'Let's just put a help sign on the beach and wait for someone to pick us up.' So they did and what a big sign it was. Day after Day they waited but nobody came. Until they finally came to their senses.

'Lets build a raft and get out of here.' Sam said. They argued over the matter but finally gave in. 'Okay' they said and set out on the task. It took them 2 days to make it but eventually they made it water tight and big enough for the four of them and a food supply. They aimed to set off the next day after the storm died down. They tried to sleep but couldn't. It was a long day ahead of them.

In the morning they got ready and made sure every thing was secure and tight. They set off in hope of reaching land soon. As they looked back they remembered the very day of their arrival and the times they spent together. Tears came to their eyes and they gazed at the island until it disappeared over the horizon. Then they rowed on. The next morning they came across a cargo ship heading for the U.S.

'Hey!' they shouted until they caught the crew'' attention. They were pulled aboard and returned home with memories to take with them for life.

Using readings from Chapter 2 do you agree that Ralph's leadership grows and that Piggy is a thinker?

In this chapter I do agree that piggy is a thinker and Ralph’s leadership grows. I think this because Ralph takes control a lot more, as he calls his second meeting and every one listens to him and obeys him it says “we’ll have to have hands up like at school”, and it is done. Also as soon as he says do something every one rushes to do it, like the idea to build a fire as we are told “A fire! make a fire! And at once half the boys were on their feet”. He is also trying keep people happy and is being positive like when he says “This is our island. It’s a good island. Until the adults come to fetch us we’ll have fun”, and he also describes the island and tells them how good it is.

I also agree with the comment made about piggy, I definitely think piggy is a thinker in this chapter. As he mighty actually be the one who gave Ralph the idea for the fire but we do not know this for certain. Also when the little child wanted to speak but was too shy he translated for him “piggy knelt by him, one hand on the great shell, listening and interpreting to the assembly”. As well as this he was the one to realise that all the top of the island was on fire when no one else did. He also was the one who thought about shelter and to do things in order of importance, not just to have fun as he says “ The first thing we should have made was shelters down by the beach”. He was also the one to think about the little children and how to know if they were all there and not near the fire, he says “and them little ‘uns was wandering about down there where the fire is. How d’you there not still there.
