Tudors And Stuarts

Until 1603 England was ruled by the Tudors and Scotland was ruled by the Stewarts.

In 1603 King James VI of Scotland became ruler of England as well, joining England and Scotland together as the United Kingdom. He was then known as King James I, since no previous English king had been called 'James'. His family name also changed spelling from 'James Stewart' to 'James Stuart'.

In 1605 Guy Fawkes and several others plotted to blow up King James I at the opening of Parliament on 5 November. The plot was discovered and the event is remembered every year on Bonfire Night.
