Storage Devices

There are a number of ways data can be stored - Rom/Ram and Magnetic or optical disks/tapes, as well as newer methods including memory sticks and MP3 players. If you have a go at the following revision and test, I will give you 3 merits for proof of 100% score.

Networks

Networks can-

• Share resources – e.g.: printers/storage space etc.…

• Share data – e.g.: a shared database – patient details accessed by different doctors in different rooms

• Share communication – internal and external electronic mail (e-mail) which can be accessed from any terminal

Networks are connected usually by wire or fibre-optic cables. Wire cables are cheap and easy to use but signal needs boosting over large distances

Fibre optics can carry much more data and many signals at the same time. They are not affected by electrical interference. Data is more secure and it does not suffer from corrosion. It is however more expensive to install and use.

Data security is an issue on networks, because there is the potential for people to access information that may be sensitive or private. Usually networks use a system of passwords in order to secure data and limit access to data. These can be set with PRIVILAGES - you can Read files (open and look at), and/or Write to files (change the contents of a file). Sometimes the eXecute privilege is used to give users permission to execute programs. (RWX)

Data Security

The development of networks and digitally stored data has meant that threats to the security of data has been addressed. These can be physical or access or data threats. You need to know what the threats are and how data can be protected against them.
